Job Description

Position Summary
Under general direction has authority, responsibility and accountability for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of wound and ostomy care. Functions primarily as consultant; provides direct patient care and education to selected patients.

Position Accountabilities
Provides consultation and assistance to staff regarding:
Management of patients with identified risk of skin breakdown or with actual alteration
Management of patients with established ostomy or continent diversion
Management of patients with draining wounds and fistulas

Serves as primary educator and collaborates with staff, for patients and families with new ostomy.

Coordinates, in collaboration with the nurse, patient, and staff, services related to wound, ostomy and incontinence care services.

Identifies and provides educational needs of nursing personnel and conducts educational classes, provides materials and newsletters related to wound and ostomy care.

Conducts product evaluations when indicated and submits reports and recommendations based on results.

Reviews and maintains wound, ostomy, and continence care product levels.
Develops and maintains interdisciplinary teams related to wound, ostomy, continence services/care.

Establishes, reviews and revises standards of care and protocol for patient population within realm of the enterstomal therapy nurse expertise.

Maintains records and statistics and submits reports to the Manager.

Responsible maintaining standard of care and best practice for wound care in Inpatient Wound Care.

Promptly addresses problems, concerns, or complaints received by patients or health care workers and provides follow-up and feedback.

With MD order, utilizes AgNO3 to cauterize closed non-proliferative wound edges, hypertrophic granulation tissue, and/or small bleeders.

With MD order, provides conservative sharp debridement of avascular tissue.
Facilitates Annual Prevalence Study and develops actions based on best practice.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred. Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred.

2 to 3 years nursing experience.

Licensed RN by State of Florida; BLS certification; Additional certifications specific to area of responsibility such as PALS certification, ACLS certification, NRP certification and Dysrythmia certification within orientation period; Certification in Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse (WOCN) or working toward completion within 24 months.
